Graviola tea bags
We all know the benefits of taking 5-a-day portions of fruit and vegetables, and research is showing us why. Many fruits are crammed with bio-compounds, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that have been used for centuries in traditional medicinal treatments. The Graviola tree is one such example of a super-fruit, which is showing remarkable success in treating many diseases, including cancer, during clinical tests.
What is Graviola?
Graviola (Annona Muricata) is a rainforest evergreen tree that is often known by other names including Brazilian pawpaw, Soursop (English), Guanábana (Spanish), Custard Apple, Cherimoya or Lakshman phal (Hindi).
It belongs to the biological Annonaceae family and grows in humid tropical forests throughout Southeast Asia, Central and South America, Australia and Africa. The fruit is green and covered with soft spines. The white fleshy pulp is sweet with a distinctive fruity taste and contains black seeds.
Graviola is crammed with healthy nutrients including B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, potassium, calcium and zinc which are found in the fruit, leaves, bark and stems of this tree. Its bioactive compounds are known to have powerful pain killing, anti-cancer anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. No wonder this fruit is used in traditional herbal remedies worldwide!
The juice, fruit and leaves of Graviola are used in many ways to treat:
- Dysentery and diarrhea
- Scurvy and skin complaints
- Odaema (water retention)
- Nasal inflammation
- Blocked sinuses
- Coughs and colds
- Liver and stomach problems
- Arthritis/ Joint pain
In addition, Graviola seeds are used as a skin astringent; to kill parasites such as head lice, bed bugs and intestinal worms; to boost lactation in nursing mothers and to reduce muscle spasms. In addition, the bark and roots can help manage blood sugar levels in diabetics and are an effective sedative.
Graviola and cancer
Although Graviola appears to be an all-round "good guy", it also shows promise as an effective weapon against cancer. In tests it has been shown to be more effective than the leading chemotherapy drug Adriamycin at killing colon cancer cells – and has none of the toxic side effects that current medications typically cause.
Other cancers that researchers believe can be treated using Graviola are:
- Prostate cancer
- Liver cancer
- Lung cancer
- Breast cancer
- Pancreatic cancer
How does Graviola work?
Graviola is high in phytochemicals called acetogenins which appear to be the key to its anti-cancer properties. In studies, Graviola shows selective cytotoxicity, meaning that it can differentiate between healthy dividing cells and harmful cancer cells, and it isolates and kills only the cancer cells.
The acetogenins are thought to work by preventing cancer cells from producing the high levels of energy they need in order to reproduce. By cutting off the blood flow to the cancerous cells and disrupting the production of Adenosine Triphosphate molecules, Graviola starves, reduces and halts the cancer cell's ability to multiply, eventually killing the cells.
Furthermore, Graviola extract has been effective in destroying cancers that have become resistant to drugs. Those who are skeptical about taking Graviola can take it alongside chemotherapy, as it improves the success of the treatment while reducing the unpleasant side effects of the toxic chemicals.
Scientific studies on Graviola
A plant-screening study by the U.S. National Cancer Institute found that chemical extracts from Graviola attacked and destroyed cancer cells in a laboratory environment. This evidence is supported by other studies showing that Graviola targets and destroys malignant cancer cells in 12 different types of cancer.
Studies found that Graviola impedes the growth of cancer cells more effectively than mainstream chemotherapy drugs such as Adriamycin. It also has the ability to target and destroy harmful cancer cells, leaving healthy cells in place, according to studies by Purdue University in Indiana, USA.
The cancer research team at the University of Nebraska, USA discovered that Graviola worked by inhibiting the signaling pathways that are required for the growth and spread of cancer. Other published studies show that Graviola protects against prostate cancer and inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor, known to be present in breast cancer. As yet, these studies have only been conducted on animals; we will cover the implications for pharmaceutical development in due course.
Graviola vs. chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses highly toxic drugs to kill all cells in the body that are dividing. This unfortunately includes hair, cells in the digestive tract, the reproductive organs, immune system, blood and bone marrow. As well as causing serious side effects, toxic chemotherapy drugs wreak havoc with the immune system, cause weight loss, nausea, hair loss and increase inflammation. In comparison, Graviola fights cancer cells selectively without any negative side effects.
Why is Graviola not commonly recognized?
Laboratory reports and scientific studies show that Graviola is a safe, effective treatment for targeting and killing cancer cells without any side effects. Despite these initial finding, few clinical trials are focusing on this super fruit. This is because federal law does not allow natural products to be patented, and therefore there is no money to be made by "Big Pharma". With no possibility of a patent and rights, drug companies cannot make the exclusive sales and high profits that feed their lucrative business. The good news is that Graviola is a natural fruit extract, available and affordable to everyone without prescription. Those who understand the powerful health benefits of Graviola can make their own choice, until laboratory tests finally catch up with what herbalists have known for decades!
Warnings about Graviola
Anyone considering taking Graviola should consult their doctor to ensure that the Graviola works in harmony with any medications and treatments that are already in place. Graviola may be unsuitable for pregnant women, those with low blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, liver or kidney disease. Long-term use will negatively affect the growth of good flora in the gut. Those currently taking CoQ10 supplements, which helps cells produce more ATP, will find that Graviola will have a contraindicatory effect and therefore these natural supplements should not be taken together.
